Concrete Bar Top and Shelves / Wine Holder

This Livingston, NJ repeat client presented us with the challenge of creating a unique shelving unit to store their liquor and wine.  Preliminary sketches were made of an asymmetrical shelf design.  Once we got the final design approved, it was time to visit the space and take precise measurements and a map of every wall stud.  The stud placement dictated the specific locations of the vertical concrete supports.  Trueform chose GFRC for this project because of the many intricate parts and long spans of these concrete planks.

Many hours were spent drawing up mounting systems and testing different options for creating and securing the wine tower. The tower included clear acrylic tubing that was cut and secured into the mold at a 3 degree angle.  The angle minus the pivot by the bottle placed each bottle exactly level when pushed into the holes. The goal for the shelves was not to see any visible fasteners, screws, or brackets.  All the shelves were fastened to the wall with angle iron that was recessed and hidden into the concrete shelves themselves. The center supports were cast with holes to toe into wall studs and snapped together using cast-in steel rods and female inserts.  All of the shelves on this project were finished top and bottom so the molds were built to allow for a clean surface finish.  The whole unit was like one big Ikea kit – everything fit perfectly into place.  Opposite the shelving unit was a concrete bar top that capped a wood sub structure.  The top was cast at 4″ thick to give a strong look.

A concrete vessel sink was placed on top of the countertop in a matching Signature Finish.  In the end it was great to look at the original rendering and see how it came to life exactly as planned.  The customer was thrilled with the results!
